The physical security industry has changed considerably since Colin Doe started his first company more than 20 years ago. Back then, who would have thought about using smart phones or tablets to remotely check in on your home or business?

For Colin, this sort of change is a constant reminder that innovation is the key to staying ahead in the security business.

As CEO of Veridin Systems Canada, Colin leads a team of innovation experts specializing in security, networking and locksmith services for a wide range of corporate and residential clients across the country. Over the years, Veridin has become one of Canada's leading security integrators. They provide access control, CCTV camera installation and monitoring, and convergence services (i.e., integrating security platforms into one IT solution), among other security services, to their clients.

"From the day I started in this business,” says Colin, “I knew that I had to do three things really well – hire great people, be client-focused, and stay innovative. We secure success with innovation, so that means working closely with our clients to develop security and IT solutions that fit their location, budget and – in the case of corporate clients – their business strategies.”

Colin’s passion for innovation led Veridin to recently launch their Mobile Surveillance Unit (MSU), a state-of-the-art command centre with full video surveillance capabilities housed in an 18ft X10 foot stealth trailer. Colin designed the MSU to provide operational and tactical support in complement to – and sometimes in lieu of – existing security resources. For example, the MSU is ideal for public or private events where organizers need to be able to monitor large crowds and have a central base of operations.

“The MSU helps our customers protect people and assets in ways that no other security firm is doing these days,” says Colin. “It’s innovation, convenience and peace of mind all together.”

Diving deeper into the digital world is another example of Veridin’s innovation. For as much as the security industry is driven by changes in technology, digital engagement through websites and social media is often a second thought for some security firms.

That’s not the case with Veridin. They know that handshakes still count for a lot in their business, so Colin and his team regularly visit client sites and networking functions such as Chamber events. They are also leveraging their connections through a brand new website, regular blogging and a focused social media strategy that connects them with new clients while at the same time providing constant touch with existing clients.

Colin and his wife Suzanne moved to Oakville eight years ago to raise their two kids, and Veridin joined the Oakville Chamber last year.

"The Oakville business community is full of people who – like those of us at Veridin – are passionate about what they do,” says Colin. “There are tremendous opportunities here to work with some great companies. Plus, it's a great place to raise a family.”
