QR Creative began as “Studio Imaging” operating out of a residential basement in Mississauga early in 1991. It was formed to meet a growing need in the print industry to provide film from digital artwork. This was at the beginning of numerous “revolutions” within the graphic arts community. By June 1992, it became apparent that we needed a commercial presence. We moved to Speers Road in Oakville, across the street from the Oakville Beaver and renamed the company as QR Imaging Inc.
Sales doubled the very first month and we experienced six years of barely keeping up with the growth in spite of adding space and design graduates every year. Perhaps we could be forgiven for thinking we knew how to build a company.
By 1999 it was time to move. We required much larger premises to accommodate our team of six designers, two administrative staff and production equipment. We had become the go-to place for high quality design work, film, digital scans, proofs and technical problem solving. We had the pleasure of working with many wonderful clients within the industry and beyond, including numerous national and international franchises, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions and manufacturers. Most had their head offices in Oakville or Burlington. We also appreciated the creative energies and vision of startup companies who needed assistance with their branding or print materials.
But, the industry keeps changing and we have had to adapt our talents and strengths to a greatly altered marketplace. Film and scans are all but obsolete. Many of our clients no longer outsource design services. In many respects the print industry remains under a cloud of uncertainty. And yet there are important niches to fill.
These changes account for our reduced size and more specialized offerings. Our primary passion is still within the design field. We have loved preparing training materials, packaging, advertisements, catalogues, nutritional guides, brochures, identity packages and display posters. One cannot be certain, but this passion may explain why clients stay with us for 10, 15 or 20 years. They have told us they appreciate the high commitment to excellence to graphic design, digital print and print management as well as art reproduction. We are honest, fair and forgiving of tight deadlines. Clients have learned to “rest easy” when they entrust a project to us, confident that it will be brought to completion on time.
We have in-house digital print technology capable of producing high quality business cards, sell sheets, booklets, calendars, coupons and brochures. We also produce larger posters, up to 43” x 96”, laminated and mounted on a variety of substrates.
Among our core competencies is a thorough understanding of offset printing, including the all-important preparation of files and images for accurate colour reproduction. Consequently, several clients rely on us to colour adjust hundreds of original art images to ensure that the final printed piece resembles the artist’s or photographer’s intention. Our contract quality colour proofs are the final court of appeal for accurate colour when jobs proceed to press.
Finally, the founder, Ted Blenkhorne, has a special appreciation for all creative endeavours. Over the years he has created numerous sculptures, been commission to design and produce custom furniture and acted as friend and mentor to several artists. QR Creative, therefore, caters to the creative community, especially in the visual arts. We offer giclée prints on archival fine art papers and canvases for anyone who wishes a superior quality print.
If you have an idea that can be fulfilled with some kind of printed medium, give us a call. We would love to hear from you. Chances are we can help.
