Oakville’s Austin Smeenk – Paralympic Canadian Record Holder Leaving For Rio!

Austin Smeenk was born with hereditary spastic paraplegia. Rather than view his disability as a burden, this 19 year old Oakville resident, blessed with a unique combination of drive, adaptability and boundless energy, is forging his way to the top of his sport – high performance wheelchair racing

“ Having a disability does not mean you are unable to do things like play hockey, ride a bike, sail a boat, snow board, or have a teen business cutting grass or blowing snow. It just means that there needs to be an openness to trying and doing things differently.”….Austin Smeenk

In his younger years Austin learned to snow board, sail, as well as play sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball. But it was when he tried wheelchair racing that he knew he had found “his” sport. With the help and encouragement of his family, friends and his trainer, Ken Thom, coupled with   Austin’s dedication and maturity beyond his years have made him a competitor to be dealt with.

Austin holds the Canadian record in 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter races and the 100, 200, and 400 meter races in the Americas. He is ranked fourth in the world!

Austin and his family thank the management and staff of The Original Sixth Line Pub for arranging a send-off BBQ party Sunday August 21st from 2:00pm to 4:00pm as Austin heads to The Rio Paralympics to capture the gold.

Austin and coach Ken Thom of Cruisers Sports

“As an active person with a physical disability, I have learned through experience that a lot of my ability happens when I am able to bridge gaps in my mind’s eye.” …Austin Smeenk
